Giving the Orbital Probe Cannon all the power it can structurally withstand creates the greatest chance of finding the Eye of the universe.
~ Avens

Avens was a Nomai from Brittle Hollow who was part of the Ash Twin Project. He was the husband of Mallow and the brother of Daz.[2][3]

The Ash Twin Project[]

Avens believed that finding the Eye of the Universe was worth the risk to create a new advanced warp core.[4] Since he hypothesized that the Eye had stopped emitting its signal, he proposed to send an Orbital Probe Cannon into orbit around Giant's Deep to search for the Eye's location.[5] After moving to the Construction Yard on Giant's Deep, Avens started constructing this cannon with Cassava.[6]

Orbital Probe Cannon[]

Along with construction, Avens together with his spouse Mallow was responsible for testing the cannon and adjusting its launch power.[7] Avens advocated for more launch power, but Yarrow and Daz were concerned about the cannon breaking under strain.[7][8] Cassava and Daz gave Mallow and Avens a slightly lower maximum power setting than the absolute maximum to account for their enthusiasm.[9]

Avens believed that since his friends knew his nature, he and Mallow should set the Orbital Probe Cannon to a higher power setting than the maximum power to create the highest chance of finding the Eye of the Universe.[10] After hearing from Cassava that the Orbital Probe Cannon was put on indefinite hold, Avens and Mallow went to join Cassava and Daz at the Construction Yard.[11]

His remains are most likely with Mallow's at the Construction Yard. Their power adjustment did end up being catastrophic for the Orbital Probe Cannon, which breaks apart as soon as it fired, with the Probe Tracking Module disappearing into Giant's Deep's ocean core.

Trivia[]

  • Avens is the common name for the Geum genus in the rose family of plants. The genus is comprised of herbaceous perennials.

References[]

  1. YARROW: Would it help to remind Avens that Mallow (his love) will be one of the Nomai aboard the cannon, or is Mallow part of the problem?
  2. CASSAVA: If I’m ever half as gooey as Mallow and Avens behave together, Daz, you may launch me from the Orbital Probe Cannon.
  3. CASSAVA: Our next step will be to send Privet up to the Orbital Probe Cannon to install the probe tracking system. DAZ: If I know my brother, Avens (and his spouse) will want to launch the probe with as much power as possible. I’m worried the cannon would break under the strain. DAZ: I propose we give Avens and Mallow a slightly lower maximum power setting than the absolute maximum possible to create room for their enthusiasm.
  4. AVENS: Is the safest path the best one? Our goal is worth the risk.
  5. AVENS: We’d need to build a probe-launching mechanism to cover those long distances quickly. A cannon in orbit around a celestial body would circumvent the need to escape gravity’s pull. CASSAVA: Giant’s Deep would be a good choice. It’s furthest from the sun, so it would provide the best angles for launch. And it’s moonless (except when the Quantum Moon is visiting). AVENS: Yes, let’s build the cannon in orbit around Giant’s Deep!
  6. YARROW: Poke just sent the warp core for the final tower to us from the Black Hole Forge. Now Ash Twin can be connected with Giant’s Deep, where Cassava is working with Avens to craft the Orbital Probe Cannon, and where Phlox is sculpting the memory statues.
  7. 7.0 7.1 YARROW: Our friends on Giant’s Deep tested the Orbital Probe Cannon today. Mallow tells me the cannon is doing well, and that Avens advocates for more launch power. If anyone can coax the maximum power from a device, Avens can.
  8. CASSAVA: Our next step will be to send Privet up to the Orbital Probe Cannon to install the probe tracking system. DAZ: If I know my brother, Avens (and his spouse) will want to launch the probe with as much power as possible. I’m worried the cannon would break under the strain.
  9. DAZ: I propose we give Avens and Mallow a slightly lower maximum power setting than the absolute maximum possible to create room for Aven's enthusiasm.
  10. AVENS: Cassava tells me he and the Construction Yard crew have determined a power setting we are not, under any circumstances, to go above. MALLOW: I see! And am I right to think that, consequently, we’ll be ignoring that setting? AVENS: I can posit with nearly 100 percent certainty our friends have accounted for our natures, so I suggest we do! AVENS: Giving the Orbital Probe Cannon all the power it can structurally withstand creates the greatest chance of finding the Eye of the universe.
  11. CASSAVA: I wish I were, my friend, but no. They aren’t certain they can fix the problem, so the Orbital Probe Cannon is on indefinite hiatus. CASSAVA: Tell Privet and Mallow they should return from the cannon. My spouse and I will remain at the Construction Yard, for now. AVENS: An update: Mallow and I will join you and Daz. Privet left to visit her brother. She fears Idaea may feel responsible.
